    Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Program

Alta Bates Summit Medical Center (ABSMC) Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Program is recognized as one of the best in the country. Our 39 bed unit, housed at the Herrick campus in Berkeley, California provides intense interdisciplinary rehabilitation specializing in stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, neurological disorders, complex orthopedic conditions and multiple trauma for patients over the age of 18.

The ABSMC Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Program is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), for Comprehensive Inpatient Rehabilitation and Brain Injury Rehabilitation. CARF is the hallmark of quality and only accredits programs that substantially meet internationally recognized standards. Our CARF accreditation assures that ABSMC Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Program has made a commitment to continually enhance the quality of our services and programs.

In addition, our Stroke Center has been recognized as among the top 5% in the United States, and was the recipient of the HealthGrades Stroke Excellence Award.

    Commitment to Quality

In 2007, the ABSMC Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Program achieved Clinical Outcomes for our patients in the top 10% of all rehabilitation programs Nationwide. (Uniform Data Systems)

We measure the outcomes and successes of our patients’ recovery so that we may continuously strive for excellence in customer care and service. We do this through the use of independent national and regional data collection systems.

The tracking system used by our therapists to rate the patients activities at admission and discharge is the Functional Independence Measure (FIM). This serves as a standard assessment tool for rehabilitation and gives us the disability measurement that determines “burden of care”. As the patient progresses the FIM score gets higher and the patient is able to function more independently.
